The MegaChlor makes chlorine on a 3-hour cycle. Every 3 hours, it starts making chlorine, and based on the power level, it will run for a fixed amount of time and then switch to standby mode. At the next 3-hour mark, it will start again. For example, at power level 5, it will be on for 45 minutes, off for 2 hours and 15 minutes (3 hours minus 45 minutes), on for 45 minutes, etc. If you use the spa and let the MegaChlor know by pressing the boost button, it will be put into boost mode and run for 3 times the normal amount of time. That way, the MegaChlor can get a jumpstart on replenishing the chlorine that just got used.

The MegaChlor-CD also features chlorine detection built directly into the cell, meaning that it doesn't need to run on that 3-hour cycle, which could lead to over-chlorination if spa usage drops. While, the MegaChlor would be on for 45 minutes and then off for 2 hours and 15 minutes—the MegaChlor-CD would be on for 45 minutes and then off until it is needed, whether that would be 1 hour or 6 hours.
